Fail.

by hillarybiscay

Well despite my best efforts, my water-treading act ended up being an epic fail. I should have learned by now that in this sport, unless your name is Super Woman, burning the candle at both ends inevitably results in one thing: you lying in bed, sick.

That’s where I am today. The GCM and I got up this morning to pack the car for swim practice and within five minutes of getting out of bed I was back on the couch in the fetal position. Maiki looked at me like, “You have got to be kidding me that you are going to try to train this morning.” Of course I still had to check with Coach just to be sure . . . Long story short, I’ve been stuck in bed since with chills, aches, fever, hardly able to keep my eyes open. And I’ve had to live vicariously through the GCM’s stories of today’s smashfests.

The timing couldn’t be worse as the GCM and I have both really been struggling for the past while and just yesterday hit the RESET button in a big way. Today was to be the first day of the rest of our careers. And I’m in bed. So far, so good . . .

I must say though that I learned another great benefit of our furry friends today: Missy Moo had no problem lying an extra 7 hours in bed with Mom! Fingers crossed that I can kick this and be back at it tomorrow!

Interesting to hear you share that you and the GCM “had been struggling for a while”… Not exactly sure what you meant by this but I find my husband and I sometimes hinder one another in training… e.g. if he’s having a bad day and wants to skip a session, I’ll skip it in sympathy. Of course, there are plenty of times when we motivate one another out the door too… but it’s not necessarily easy when husband and wife are both training and racing. I can’t imagine the challenge when you both do this as a career.

Hillary- Please, please let your body rest and recover! By the sounds of it, fever, chills & aches, sleepiness- one day most likely won’t do it it. If you try to SMASH yourself too soon, your body will Smash you back- & you will be back in bed before you know it. It will just take longer to recover in the end. Your body is sending you a message :)
Hope you feel better soon!

you too? Yes, rest. I HATE it too, and I know you do. I just lost a whole month of fitness because I didn’t go to the doc when I needed to and I kept trying to work my ass off and fight through the training. So, rest little one!!!!!!!!!!!! And, I read something the other day about how being sick is just part of being a good athlete. It happens to every good athlete- and we are not in such control that we can always avoid it. It is part of the game, and you just manage it.

Feel better, Hillary!!! So happy your puppy is a good companion; they know when to be by your side and they are role models for resting, aren’t they? I hope tomorrow is a much, much better day for you!!

Hi, glad you decided to stay in bed. Your body needs this. My training partner is now going to therapy for the next 5 weeks and can’t ride with me as she put off going to the doc for the pain in her wrist. She has had this pain in her wrist for over 5 months. Now she can’t shift her bike or brake without severe pain. She kept thinking it will go away or get better. Now here I am by myself riding many miles alone, wishing she was with me. The point is, we have to swallow our pride and give into what is going on with our bodies. Please take care of yourself, it is okay, really. Before you know it, you will be back to your amazing self!! I really want you to do awesome in Wisconsin. I will be there riding my bike as you blast by me on your second loop!!!! Take care and enjoy your little companion napping with you.
