22 December 07: Never a dull moment!

My brief time in LA hasn’t exactly turned out as I had planned. Right now I was supposed to be in the midst of a big brick session with one of my athletes, but instead I’ve managed an hour on the trainer in my hospital gown (hoping to try to do one more hour later)! I ended up in the operating room last night, having surgery on the elbow that I injured falling during the 50-mile off-road run last month.
My elbow was swollen for about four weeks following the race, but appeared to have finally healed. Then, for some strange reason, during the course of the swim-bike session I crammed in before my Wednesday flight to LA, the elbow decided to grow into an huge, red, shiny, painful, alien-looking thing. 16 December 07: Happy Holidays!

I have been thinking a lot about my family, because I’m now counting down the days til I get to have some holiday time with them. My mom is at home working on the yearly family holiday cards, so I thought I would post this year’s family photo here. Enjoy!
I head to LA on Wednesday for a very exciting event: the opening of the first SplitsFiftyNine retail store! Until then, I am making the most of my last Tucson training for awhile. I’ve just had Heather Gollnick here for a little training camp for 11 days; I think we are both much more fit than we were 11 days ago, so the mission was accomplished. 4 December 07: More Running Adventures

Since I was feeling so special following the 50-miler two weeks ago, running the Tucson Marathon last weekend seemed like a fantastic idea . . . No, really–the Tucson Marathon was always on my agenda, but I did second-guess this plan after that ultramarathon took a much more substantial toll than I had expected. The weekend in between these two events, I was able to do not much more than an hour of survival-running at a time; I emailed my coach just to make sure that attempting to run a hard 26.2 the following weekend wouldn’t be a bad idea. He said not to worry about my previously-held aspirations–or delusions–of running 3:00: “No dramas–just run under 3:10.”
