It really doesn’t get much better than waking up to Petr V wearing nothing but a speedo, knocking at my hotel room door. God I love the Euros. (Petr V: “my rival,” or the Czech pro who races more ironmans than I
do.)
This was how I began my week here in Floripa, one of my favorite ironman destinations. Because Petr V also races heaps, I knew he could be counted on to do some proper training this week. We agreed to do daily ocean swim workouts, and true to form, there he was at 7:15 am our first morning here. Classic. We got in nearly 5km that morning, including a stop to check out an island that we found a couple of kilometers off of our hotel’s beach.

8 May 08: Checking in from Tucson

The other night a friend of mine claimed that he didn’t know how I was doing because I hadn’t updated my blog . . . I argued that I didn’t have anything worth reporting here: “What do you want me to say: ‘My personal life is a mess, but training is going well!’”
To this, my friend, a pro cyclist, replied, “Of course your personal life is a mess. If you had told me you wanted to be a professional athlete, I could have told you that your personal life would be a mess. But how hard is it to tell us that you are training well?!”
