29 August 08: Back in the good old U S of A

Well I am sitting here with my grande triple-shot soy latte, and Vanity Fair on the table next to me . . . What more could a girl ask for? An Ironman on Sunday? How about that? Could it get even better? Actually, it could–I could have to wait only a week until my next one! Yep! Got it. I am a happy camper here in Louisville, where on Sunday I have the opportunity to do part one of my midwestern-Ironman double.
I have been wearing the same clothes for a day and a half now, as my luggage did not arrive–and last night I arrived at my accomodation only to find that I was locked out. No clothes, no home, but no major complaints! I have my bike, and I… Read More
24 August 08: Warm-up Weekend

It’s time for bed here in Leysin because Belinda has done her job and dominated the bike in Penticton (Ironman Canada) to the extent that I can go to bed now that she is running! I have not managed to accomplish much of anything since she began racing this afternoon, our time; when BG is racing I think that what I am doing from miles away might be more accurately termed “virtual racing,” rather than “virtual spectating.” When she is out there, I almost feel like I am out there with her!
And thanks to Coachie, I really got to pretend like I was today . . . Somehow he decided that it would be nice to warm up for my next set of back-to-back ironmans with the longest track session I… Read More
21 August 08: Last week in Leysin

Life is good. It is a beautiful sunny day here in the mountains, and I got to do a hard long run in the sunshine. I’ve found that hard long runs can be pretty ugly when I am not feeling good, but today was one of those days when it was easy to keep my legs turning over quickly and “push the hills,” as coach instructed. Up here in Leysin, “push the hills” basically means “smash yourself for the entire run,” since most everything is either up or down. It was a sunny smashfest, and I loved it.The other good news is that my other half is back in town!! Wellington, that is . . .
But as much as I enjoy being at camp and training up here in the mountains, I… Read More
17 August 08: Olympic Fever

This will be a quick report, as I must get to bed to prepare for another early morning of virtual triathlon spectating. This morning we were brewing up espresso in the Grangers’ fancy coffee machine at 5 AM, while screaming at the television and computer simultaneously. We take our virtual spectating very seriously around here. It is perhaps our favorite activity besides training–and of course actually doing some races ourselves on occasion! We’ll watch any triathlon, but when our own are involved, the spectating experience is quite intense. Add to that the Olympic Games and our training partner, Nicola, mixing it up with the sport’s big guns at the very front of the race, and you can imagine what Belinda and I looked like this morning. Nicola was running in the… Read More
17 August 08: Runfest report and other much more exciting news…

Well I have just completed my runfest weekend and am a bit disappointed to report that my legs are still functioning. They are tired, but let’s put it this way: if my legs feel like this during the last half marathon in Madison, I’ll be a happy girl. But, although this may come as a surprise to some people, I can sometimes draw the line between smart and silly when it comes to my training. And I decided that eight hours of running in two days would be quite sufficient for this weekend. Although I was not able to render my legs entirely dysfunctional (which does give me a good bit of confidence), I thoroughly enjoyed my running weekend, and I am pretty sure that Belinda… Read More
