27 September 08: Exciting times in T-town

It was a big Saturday night here in Tucson. Of course it’s all relative because last weekend consisted of nothing but training and talking to myself . . . But anyways, after a big run day today, my friend Colleen and I took her little son to see a hip-hop dance show. I am very impressed by people who have rhythm, and I could have watched these performers all day! It is so amazing to see those skills up close. In fact, I was thinking that I might need to add them to my list of requirements for Mr. HPB. Wanted: one skinny runner boy with bike mechanic skills–must also be able to dance hip-hop . . .
Speaking of skinny runner boys, the other highlight of my week was a… Read More

Sorry to go M.I.A. for a few days, but I have been stuck in the hurt locker and couldn’t get out! In fact, I have not emerged, but am trying to motivate to accomplish all tasks that do not involve standing up, or anything similar. I had aspirations of washing some dishes and putting away some clothes, but such activites will have to wait about 24 hours. Luckily for me, while I do have many miles to swim during a couple of sessions in the next half-day, I don’t have any other athletic activites scheduled that don’t involve floating. God bless compression socks.
And while I am on the topic, this seems an appropriate time to explain why they have become a permanent fixture in my wardrobe these days. I’ve… Read More

Last weekend was a false alarm. I started to get back into real training and promptly got a bit sick. So coach ordered a few more easier days, and we decided that I’d follow that up with three weeks of hard work straight into Kona. Sounded like a good idea to me!
So I spent this week working on catching up on “real life” stuff, and still have not completed that task. It is during weeks like this that I wonder how I ever have time to do proper training! However, I am happy to report that it is now time to once again let everything else slide and focus on giving it to myself. After all, that’s what I like to do best.
I am already sunburned from a few hours… Read More

I am about to chat with my friends at www.triharderradio.com, which you can listen to live or download as a podcast afterwards. But I also wanted to let you know that I was also a guest yesterday on the Simply Stu show, and that podcast is available at www.simplystu.com.
And for the sake of full disclosure, there is one more–in case of the off-chance that you aren’t totally sick of me already. This is a short interview that I did with Endurance Planet: http://www.enduranceplanet.com/programs/09-16-08_champion.mp3
The Double Double in Wisconsin: My First Ironman Win

I firmly believe that any measure of “success” that I have experienced in this sport derives from an approach to training and racing unlike most others—methods that most would consider somewhere between unwise and completely insane. It was only fitting, then, that my first ironman resulted from my eighth iron-distance race in 2008, and my second ironman in eight days—not exactly most people’s idea of a prescription for a racing breakthrough. But in my 31st ironman, after five second-place finishes in the past two years (including the past two Ironman Wisconsin races), I finally had my day last Sunday in Madison. Here is how it went down.
I have to admit that I really wanted to beat all of the boys out… Read More
