24 October 08: A New Direction

Over the past month, my training partners and I have gone through the difficult process of parting ways with our team and coach and planning a new direction for our future. Brett Sutton’s guidance over the past three years has shaped me into a new athlete: from a “pro” who was nowhere near even making a living from this sport into an Ironman Champion. When I joined Brett in October of 2005, he promised me that if I gave his program 100%, in three years’ time, he would make something decent out of me–but what we were able to accomplish far exceeded both of our expectations. Needless to say, I am very grateful for the opportunities with which he has provided me.
Now that the three-year project has come full circle, it… Read More

Hawaii Ironman Race Report

This year’s Hawaii Ironman was one of the least impressive showings in my career. However, there was a high point: I did accomplish my long-time goal of winning the Hawaii Ironman swim. Being the first woman to emerge from the water in Kona has been something I have dreamed of since I first saw the race on television years ago.
When I recognized Nina (Kraft) and Leanda (Cave) in my swim group just after the turnaround, I knew there was a good chance that I might be near the front of the women’s race. And thus it would be worth my while to make my way to the front of our pack once we neared the… Read More

I finally arrived home in Tucson last night after tacking on a bonus vacation on the way home from Kona. Wellington and I stopped off in Hollywood on our way home and spent a few nights with some friends at the Roosevelt Hotel. We’ve been enjoying all kinds of off-season activities, like shopping, going to trendy nightclubs, eating dessert, etc…Although I certainly couldn’t do this lifestyle full-time, it has been fun for a few days to just relax and not have to worry about the little things, like early bedtimes and regimented eating habits.
We even got to see a pre-season Lakers game from a private box–that was a highlight!
And then of course the weekend included the obligatory 5k swim workout in the hotel pool. Mind you this… Read More
9 October 08: Time to chill

I can officially say the work is done! I did my last big workouts yesterday; today I am going to take the day off, and tomorrow will be an easy day. By Saturday I should be jumping out of my skin! But by the end of the day today, you won’t want to know me…I don’t do well with days off!
I am off now for soy lattes with my friend Rach (she also writes one of my very very favorite blogs: www.rachelrosshawaii.blogspot.com) and then to the PowerBar breakfast, and then massage, and then pro meeting….
But I wanted to post a couple of pics from yesterday afternoon at the Newton and Cervelo booths. Somehow I missed a pic with my parents, who stopped by–the first time I have… Read More
