27 November 08: Person Family Thanksgiving
Posted on 28. Nov, 2008 by hillarybiscay in Blog | 3 Comments
I’ve just returned home from my second Thanksgiving run–just a short one, and mostly just an excuse to use my new headlamp, which is on loan from Dougie. (Last week, in Tucson, it enabled us to see my first live rattlesnake, which was slightly disconcerting.) I am pretty obsessed with the headlamp, and with the fact that I can now run in places that are otherwise essentially totally unlit….Of course I had to start my Thanksgiving day with a couple-hour running warm-up for our big family dinner.
My family is currently in the midst of our annual Person Family Thanksgiving, which is a three-day extravaganza at the country club in Pauma Valley, California. The Person Family–my mom’s side–has been coming here every year since before she was born. I have only missed… Read More

The last ten days have been nuts! I’ve been from Vegas, to Cabo San Lucas, back to Vegas, then back home to Tucson for a couple days, then to Tempe for iron-weekend, back to Tucson, and now I am home with my family in Palos Verdes (California). I would be remiss not to follow up on my last blog, although my surprise weekend seems like ages ago now. We had an awesome couple of days of beach, relaxation, nightlife, etc. in Cabo–generally pretending to be “normal people.” It was strange. I did have to drag (Actually the ironmen were naturally keen, so I must give them credit!) my friends Daniel and Jeff out for one little run around downtown Cabo, during which we definitely did not see any other runners, and elicited… Read More
14 November 08: Surprise Weekend

After two weeks very, very easy following Kona, and then another two weeks easy (getting moving again), this week I have gotten down to business a bit. Cliff instructed us to be in off-season mode until this week, so as soon as I returned home from Boston on Monday, I felt free to begin the smashfest. Of course “smashfest” is a relative term at this point; this week’s “smashfest” looks nothing like what one would mid-season. Four weeks of off-season mode meant not only a hugely-reduced training load, but also an increased junk-food-eating load….So, in addition to being generally out of shape, I am biking and running with a weight vest right now. Actually, it would probably be more accurately described as “weight shorts” than a “weight vest,” in my… Read More
8 November 08: Family reunion in Cambridge!

This weekend I’m in Cambridge for my annual Harvard visit. My little sister, Cameron, is in her final year of law school here. Luckily for me, Cameron has done the honors for the family. Although we eventually succeeded in turning my dad into a (USC) big Trojan fan, my parents were more than a little disappointed when I opted for a more athletically-inclined institution after being admitted to Harvard as a high school senior. Thankfully, my overachieving sister has picked up the slack! And I get to make brief visits back here to this cool little town, and enjoy some lovely runs along the Charles River, in addition to quality time with my sis.
However, the 4PM darkness and chilly weather here have me counting the days til I will be in the Southern Hemisphere. One of the… Read More
2 November 08: Home Sweet Home

After a weekend in Vegas with friends last weekend, I was ready to be done with my two weeks of full-on “off season.” I am just not cut out for that lifestyle! This week I have been back in Tucson, doing a little bit of training that bears some resemblance to proper workouts, while actually sleeping eight hours per night. I have two of my favorite training partners, Chris and Marilyn McDonald, staying with me for a month, while Chris prepares for Ironman Arizona. It so much fun to have them around and to have a swimming partner!
Since I actually have a couple of months to spend at home right now, I thought it was a good time to show you all what “home” looks like! Below are some… Read More
