Last Thursday Coachie sent me over a gift from the States: a brand shiny new . . . training partner! This was very nice of him considering that I was going to have to say goodbye to training partner, etc etc extraordinaire this Tuesday. Yes, Dougie is on his way home to the States now, and Eric Bell is now on swim and track duty.
Eric is a former standout collegiate runner and has won pretty much every short course age group title one can win, including his age group at the world championships last year. He would like to race as a pro and has qualified to do so, but Coach has said that runner boy must get his swimming skills up to scratch before racing the big boys. So he… Read More
18 February 09: Perfect day for a birthday swim . . .

Last Friday morning, Belinda and I were in the midst of a workout at the Noosa Aquatic Center when the swim coach called out, “Who wants to do 100×100s next week?” My dear friend instantly volunteered me . . . I didn’t see her putting her hand up–just mine. But I wasn’t complaining; she knows me well. I just asked what the inspiration for the celebration would be. Coach Max informed me that Emma-Kate (Lidbury, up-and-coming 70.3 pro from the UK) wanted to have a 10-km swim party for her birthday. Count me in.
Her birthday is tomorrow, and since Wednesday is my easy day, with just a little swim-run in the morning, today was a perfect day for a pool party. (Coachie agreed, with the condition that I eat… Read More

I have the afternoon off today and have thus recovered enough brain cells to write a blog. I still haven’t thought of anything exciting to report, so if you are looking for that, you can stop right here.
The highlight of last week was breaking not one–but two–glasses over the course of the evening on Tuesday upon stumbling home from my afternoon track session. I should note that Greg Bennett jogged through the field where I was running track, and I was making noises like a dying animal while running his “jog” pace. Anyways, when Dougie found himself on his knees cleaning up shattered glass for the second time that evening, it was decided that I was a hazard to the household and I was banned from the kitchen and dining area.… Read More
