28 April 09: Racing Update!

Posted on 29. Apr, 2009 by hillarybiscay in Blog | 5 Comments

As promised, I wanted to keep all of my awesome supporters up to date on my upcoming races. I said last month that Ironman Brasil, one of my very favorite races, was a “definite” for this year. Well, things have changed . . . Sadly, I will be missing Floripa this year.

I did not expect to spend the summer training in Europe this year, since I am not longer part of Team TBB and thus am no longer camp-ing in Switzerland. However, I recently came upon an opportunity to train in Germany for the summer, so I will be heading over there on May 10. In order to avoid traveling across the globe every few weeks to race, I decided to do my next ironman in Europe, at Ironman… Read More

Ironman China Race Report

Most people probably know that I’ve crammed my fair share of racing into the past three years. By now it’s difficult for me to find a precedent-setting challenge at ironman. It’s always a hard day, comprised of numerous tests that make finishing seem somewhat incomprehensible at times—but I now feel like I’ve encountered nearly every sort of test once or twice before, and have always been able to make it through to the other side.

That said, Ironman China, my 34th ironman, set a new precedent: it was the toughest day of racing I have ever experienced. However, while this fact in itself would usually rank a race amongst my favorites, I don’t think I ever need to return to thisRead More

21 April 09: I'm alive!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I am alive and did, in fact, survive the China death march on Sunday. Details will follow tomorrow, but I though I ought to check in since I didn’t get a chance to do so pre-race. I was busy dealing with losing a piece of my race wheel, and then with my bike going missing for a couple of days and having to persuade Hong Kong customs to release it–even though I didn’t even travel through Hong Kong??? Anyhow, it was one of those kind of weeks, but I can now tick that country and race off the list, and I don’t think I ever need to go back. I’ve just touched down in Tucson and am looking forward to 16 days… Read More

16 April 09: Australian Easter

Posted on 16. Apr, 2009 by hillarybiscay in Blog | 3 Comments

Over the past few years, I’ve become pretty well-accustomed to missing my family on Easter. When my sister and cousins and I were growing up, this was a particularly special family holiday: my grandparents would take all sixteen of us–cousins, aunts, uncles–to Mexico, Hawaii, or the like for a week of quality time together. To this day, these are some of our best family memories…

Because I am now too often away from my biological family, I’ve come to understand the importance of the adopted family; although I enjoy the opportunities for travel afforded to me by my job, it is sometimes difficult to be away from home. I get through these times because of my adopted triathlon family, comprised of some dear friends who also make their homes all… Read More

13 April 09: My favorite run in Noosa

Posted on 13. Apr, 2009 by hillarybiscay in Blog | 3 Comments

Sadly, I have only two days left in this year’s Australian adventure. I’ve been here for three and a half months and Noosa now feels a lot like home…But it’s time to go start earning the monthly wage–as in, time to start the racing season! This is the longest uninterrupted training block I have had in years, and I am really excited to finally be able to get out there and test my fitness in China this weekend.

One of the things I will miss most about Noosa (until I am back here for the next Australian summer!) is my runs in the Noosa National Park, which is just down the street from where I have been living. The trails there are amazing; I could run all day there, but… Read More
