29 March 10: Dude, who hijacked my easy ride?

WANTED for hijacking my easy ride this morning: Two Ironman Champions dressed all in black. May answer to the names “GCM” and “Big Sexy.”

I didn’t invite anyone on my easy ride this morning. Intentionally. Nevertheless, I was only halfway through my first cup of coffee when Team McDonald showed up at our front door–in spandex, with bikes. Chris promised a “‘Chris easy,’ not ‘Maiki easy’” ride. I went to get dressed. Then everyone started punching buttons on the coffee machine, and drinking, and an hour later we were finally out the door. I quickly realized that we had failed to leave the GCM at home, and that I was reliving a familiar scene (See photo evidence above.). I guess there won’t be any “easy rides” in my near future.

28 March 10: Got Motivation?

This is my super 73-years-young athlete, Mickie Shapiro. I told you about her back in December after her super race at Ironman Western Australia. Yes, I said “ironman”: at 72 years of age, Mickie completed 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of cycling, and followed it up with a marathon (26.2 miles) for good measure.

Lest you think that such a feat might only be accomplished by a superhuman ironwoman, I have an article for you to read. The Orange Country Register’s David Whiting has done an awesome story about Mickie in which he describes how Mickie “has osteoporosis, thyroid problems and deformed feet. She has to wear extra large running shoes and sometimes takes as long as five minutes in the morning before she can place… Read More

26 March 10: Return to Mt. Lemmon and More . . .

After our quick LA visit, the GCM and I have settled in to appreciate a few weeks of quality training time here at home in Tucson before a couple weeks on the course in Lanzarote and our race there. This is an awesome time to be training in Tucson because we have a mini training squad going here; we are loving it! Just two blocks away, we have Team McDonald–Marilyn and Chris–and just down the road in the other direction, we have Sam McGlone and TJ Tollakson.

The GCM and I do so much training together that we are always excited to add some new friends to the mix–especially strong ones like the aforementioned crew. We get to suffer at FORD Aquatics swim… Read More

25 March 10: Mini’s LA Marathon Day!

Posted on 25. Mar, 2010 by hillarybiscay in Blog | 1 Comment

In case it wasn’t already obvious, this was a big day for us. The race was a bit of a logistical nightmare, so luckily we had the Happy Snapper with us and we could divide and conquer. I got to hang out with Cam in the (delayed) race start chaos at Dodger Stadium and experience one of the LA Marathon highlights, which is when they play the “I love LA” song after the starting gun. It took Cam seven minutes to get to the startline amidst all of the crowds, so we definitely got to enjoy the whole song! Maiki and I then tried unsuccessfully to catch her at miles 2 and 6 (but found our other athlete–one of my stud ironwomen was running also!). Then we were on the… Read More

23 March 10: Mini Biscuit Marathon Project

Posted on 23. Mar, 2010 by hillarybiscay in Blog | 5 Comments

I am still on a high from Mini Biscuit’s big weekend and our super-secret marathon mission. You see, it’s been five year’s since her first (and last) one, because during these five years, it seemed that every time Cameron tried to ramp up her running miles, she ended up with a stress fracture. During this time, there were a couple of marathon entries that went to waste, and even worse, each new fracture resulted in time completely off of running, and that did not make Mini Bisc happy. In fact it made her really upset.

About three stress fractures in, Mom and Dad Biscay (the latter being a doctor) concluded that the youngest Biscay was “just not made for running,” a mantra they repeated to me throughout her subsequent… Read More
