29 April 10: Off to the races!

Yesterday the GCM and I said goodbye to home for FOUR months! Our traveling road show’s itinerary looks something like this: California-Lanzarote-Brasil-Kona-Coeur d’Alene-Kona-Lake Placid-Germany-Copenhagen-Louisville-Wisconsin . . . and then finally back to Tucson in September!
While I did $18 (quite a contrast to $4 in Tucson) beach yoga this morning, then GCM took care of the bikes in Mom and Dad’s garage. Look at my beauty! It is ready for . . . a photo shoot tomorrow.
The Plasma, on the other hand, is read for . . . ACTION! The GCM will be racing Wildflower on Saturday, while I have decided to sit this one out. If I can manage to get my training ban lifted by Sunday, I will join my little sis for some family… Read More
27 April 10: Stick a Fork in Me

I recently received an email from a reader asking about how to evaluate “when to go through fatigue, or back off.” He asked, “What is your opinion on this?”
This is a fantastic question and is, quite frankly, one of the biggest reasons that I have a coach. Making this call for myself, within my own daily training, is something I am always working to improve. Making this judgement for my athletes seems not to be a problem, but wisdom and objectivity in relation to my own training is always a challenge for me. Left to my own devices, I would do every mile of training on my program (and then probably a few more while attempting to re-do workouts that didn’t go as well as I would have liked) ,… Read More
25 April 10: Champ’s Carrots

I figure that today is the perfect day to share Sam’s carrot “fries” recipe, because today we discovered that they are lucky carrots–or the food of champions! I am really psyched to report that this morning in Texas, Sam took out the Texas (LoneStar) 70.3. And this wasn’t just any old 70.3, either–it was one of the championship races, so it had a $75,000 prize purse, and a correspondingly competitive field. So it was a big win! This made our day here in the ‘hood.
So without further ado, here’s the carrot process, as described by Sam before she headed to Texas . . .
CHAMP’S CARROT “FRIES”
Ingredients (pictured above):
1 lb. organic carrots
2 tbsp. olive oil
2 tbsp. dark (Canadian!) maple syrup
2 tbsp. (or… Read More
23 April 10: A Familiar Place . . .

The fetal position on the couch, that is . . . I’ve spent a lot of time in this position this week–between nearly every training session, to be exact. Yesterday was the only exception, as I had an easy day; there was still a lot of quality time spent here, but the difference was that I did have some energy to tackle my to-do list to the extent that I can now ignore it again for a few days.
the current state of my glamorous life . . .
I’m not complaining. Training is going really well. My sessions have been consistently good. It’s just that by the time I am done, all I seem to be able to do is grab some food and collapse on the couch.… Read More
21 April 10: Monday Night Dinner

The GCM and I were just talking about how we are SO not ready to leave Tucson next week. As has probably been obvious here, training has been awesome, and that has been due in a large part to the training crew we have going here on the west side of town. Everyone has been willing to be a bit flexible with his or her training schedule in order to facilitate group sessions, which I think helps all of us get the most out of ourselves during every workout.
Believe it or not, outside of training, we actually choose to spend more time together socializing! I feel really lucky to have a group like this here. One of the traditions we have established in our new little… Read More
