27 July 10: Ironman Lake Placid

Sunday was not the most fun day for the GCM or me. Spectating when my other half is racing is always a nerve-wracking experience, but it becomes excruciating when I have to watch him struggling out there for hours on end. Last year here in Lake Placid, the GCM had everything his own way, from start to finish. This year, beginning with a sub-par swim, he had to work for every mile of the race. It was one of those days.

I did get a smile almost every time I saw him, though . . . See above for the best bike shot I could get–he was still moving too quickly, and this was on a climb!

The race pretty much looked like this for the first 118 miles… Read More

23 July 10: My Superstars

It has been such a crazy whirlwind of a week (which continues, hence this very short blog) that I haven’t yet had a chance to brag about an amazing feat by one of my athletes last weekend. My youngest star athlete, Emily Berkin (pictured with Amy the SuperMom post-race), age FIFTEEN, did her first half ironman last weekend at the Vineman 70.3. And she did much more than just finish: she finished in 5:48! Emily just finished her freshman year in high school and is determined to do Ironman Wisconsin as soon as she turns 18.  She played cheering section for Mom and I there in 2008, so she has made the perfect selection for her first iron-adventure! I think she is well on her way!

And this is… Read More

We made it! This is quite a change of scenery from Kona, but the Champ is already feeling quite comfortable in his old stomping grounds.

I made him pull over to the side of the road during our drive up the mountain on our way into town yesterday because I saw this trail. Plus it was 4PM and I hadn’t exercised yet. “Time to run now!!”

We were glad we did. Then we had one more stop before the hotel: we had to hit the swim course! I love training in the lake here.

I must admit that today was not so pleasant. It was pouring rain, thundering, and lightning on and off all day. So today became another runday-funday for me and hopefully I will get… Read More

19 July 10: One Last Sunset

It’s been a frantic couple of days as the GCM and I prepared to “move” again. Right now we are in the air over the Pacific on our way from Kona to Lake Placid, New York, where the GCM will be hosting a smashfest this Sunday. Since we had been in our little “home” in Kona for over six weeks, though, we had really settled in, and packing felt a bit like it does when one moves from one “real” home to another. Not fun. However the suitcase-living–meaning only 1-3 weeks in each location–that we have planned for the next several weeks will also be a quite chaotic. It is always a challenge to keep training consistently while moving around so much. But this is the reality of two… Read More
