31 May 10: Taking Care of Business

The Ironman Lanzarote-Brasil double is now complete. Yesterday was a super fun day and my body cooperated enough to enable me to take care of business, or get that darn kona-qualifying slot!! This meant I had to finish in the top 4 (The first two girls already had their slots based on their top 10 overall finishes in Kona last year) and within 5% of the winning time; I knew that bit would be no small task given that our field included the #4 and #9 women in the world. So while I reallllly wanted a podium finish, I am pleased to have this done and to have ridden my bike more like the way I´ve been doing in training. The swim and the run were another story, but that´s the fun of this sport isn´t it?! I will post a full race report soon , but in the meantime, here is the day according to the Happy Snapper….
Transition area yesterday morning (that´s Amanda) . . . It had been raining on and off for a couple of days, so they covered our bikes for us–very nice! I managed to use up all of of my bad luck before the race when I found my tire flat upon arriving at my bike. Lots of emergency tire-changing, re-gluing, and locating of a replacement-spare threw off the pre-race schedule but it all got done!
It was just getting light before the swim start . . .
We got more rain during the run . . .
I spent the whole ride in third place and ran in third until 22kms when my friend and one of my fave old training partners, Donna, caught me. I figured I would try to go with her for as long as I could . . .
It ended up being 20 kilometers together–and as you can see, we picked up some passengers along the way! (We also got passed by one woman, so we were running in 4th and 5th.)
This ended in a sprint finish; I was 4th and Donna was 5th. I was very grateful to her for keeping me focused for the last half marathon!
Congrats all around with Dede, defending champ and #2 yesterday. She is a stud. I want to be fast like her when I grow up.
Breaking it down with Amanda post-race . . . Being upright required propping myself up with my arms.
Reunited with my super support staff post-race. He is a gem not only for that but because apparently he loves me when I am filthy and have matted ironman hair too!
