10 June 10: Hitting it on the Highway

. . . also known as “THE highway” or “the Queen K”

I must admit that coming to Kona for training camp immediately after qualifying for the big dance has dramatically increased my appreciation for earning this privilege. After starting this season unsure about whether I would race here if given the chance (business decision–sometimes we must opt for races with the highest likelihood of earning money), I’ve now got it set firmly on the schedule and find myself more excited about this prospect than I had expected, daydreaming about it during training sessions right here on the course.

Today I had my first *little* opportunity to rehearse. It was just a 20-kilometer time trial out on the Queen K but after a few hours on the bike yesterday, I am enjoying feeling my legs again. And the GCM is equally excited about downloading my wattage data–the “dah-tahs,” as he says–thanks to my CycleOps powermeter. Knowing that the “dah-tahs” will be reviewed upon my return home helps keep me honest when I am out there on a solo TT–not quite as much fun as cycling with my Tucson tt-ing friends, Sam and Marilyn, but probably a necessary evil.
