17 June 10: Another Swimming Adventure

My mother always told me, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say it at all.” Hence you have not heard from me for a couple of days. Turns out it’s not all sunshine and rainbows here in Hawaii. Literally, maybe . . . Figuratively, not so much.
You see, I have been in a bit of a funk because I re-entered the world of running on Monday and it was not pretty. The good news is that, apparently, time off of running does not make my running better. The bad news is that, apparently, time off of running did not make my running better. It made me faTter, not faSter.
While I bought into Coach’s idea that a little time off of the run legs might help start my running down a new and better path, I have found myself coming back from the little break feeling unfit to the extent that staying on the treadmill for 40 minutes is a struggle.
What to do now? The way I see it, the only way to get through it is to go through it–struggle through it, for now . . . I have to see every painful run as a building block that I am adding to re-construct that thing called run fitness.
Okay, back to sunshine and rainbows! Well actually this morning down at Manini Beach, the sun was covered by clouds, but it was still really beautiful . . . Thanks to some lovely locals who included me in their ocean-swim adventure, I had the pleasure of swimming from here to the Captain Cook Monument across the bay (the white speck in the distance). Of course we took a circuitous route around the bay for extra miles and to check out the reef!
But we eventually arrived here for an up-close view. I’ve been hearing about this place for years, so I was very excited to see it for myself.
I saw lots of fish while swimming with some human fish . . .
Mermaids, maybe??
The locals like to do crazy things like try to swim through here . . .
I was like, “Are you kids crazy?!”
I made it through with just a couple of bruises. Thanks for an awesome open-water workout, ladies!
It was nice to feel good doing something on a three-run day. Two down, one to go . . .

Dos gringas muy guapas (two very pretty girls)!!! Do you always swim with your Tiffany necklace?
The legs will come around and be stronger. The rest is good. “Trust the Muffin!”
Loving the Hawaii updates. Hang in there on the run!
