18 June 10: Baby Steps

My strategy for the run project: as with any setback, all we can do is aim to do a little better every day– a little better from wherever that setback put us, that is . . . For example, on Tuesday I lasted 2 miles on the treadmill at a speed of 7.8 miles per hour. Take my word for it that this means the situation was really not pretty at all. By run number three on Thursday, I could do five miles at 8.1 miles per hour. Thanks very much to my boyfriend for having an ice bath ready for me after run number two; wow, I have a renewed appreciation for ice baths training here in Kona!
But I digress. What I am trying to say is that I could focus on the (depressing) fact that I have run entire marathons on the treadmill faster than 8.1 miles per hour, or I can be encouraged by last night’s jog because it is a step in the in the right direction. This is all I can ask for right now, so I opt for the latter. And keep plugging away.
And when all else fails, my running strategy is: refresh the playlist! I haven’t shared one here for awhile, so here’s the new one that I came up with last night–with some awesome old stuff too . . .
Bootlegs & B-Sides (the whole album!), Ice Cube
Rude Boy, Rihanna*
Rock that Body, Black Eyed Peas
D.O.A., Jay-Z*
California Gurls, Katy Perry featuring Snoop
My Chick Bad, Ludacris*
You Found Me, The Fray
Jai Ho!, Pussycat Dolls
Disturbia, Rihanna
**Asterisks indicate special recommendations from Sam. In other words, this is what The Champ is training to these days.
These pics are from my ride today. Above is what I like to call “Things you don’t notice during the Ironman,” or the beautiful water color and the Pu’ukohola Heiau, which you can see from the bike course between Kawaihae and the Queen K. And at top is the best picture I could get without much warning when a German Cycling Machine flew past during his time trial, practicing to own this highway come October!

Why are you disappointed that you can only run 5 measly miles at 8.1 mph? Treadmills are not calibrated. Get outside and run on trail to build endurance with reduced injury. Then, start worrying about speed. Good luck!
Hang in there – your run will be back better and stronger than ever!
