23 June 10: Ironman Swim

I’ve been soaking up as much ocean-view as I can before my little trip tomorrow. To answer your questions, YES I will be racing Ironman Coeur d’Alene on Sunday (Follow along with live coverage at www.ironman.com. I believe the professionals will be starting at 6:25AM PST.). However, Coach wanted this one done with “minimal interruption to training,” so I won’t leave Kona til Thursday afternoon.
I am very much looking forward to my fourth visit to Coeur d’Alene; it is such a beautiful place with a cute little town in which everyone seems to get into the race spirit and come out to support the athletes. Coeur d’Alene is one of my favorite events: I raced here as an age grouper in 2003 and as a pro in 2006, with a bonus visit in between in 2004 to support friends.
Yesterday morning we had an ocean adventure on the ironman swim course; as you can see above, there was quite a swell out there. It even ventured over onto Ali’i Drive . . .
Because of the swell, the ocean was cloudy and there weren’t many fish to be seen. I am still waiting for my first dolphin swimming experience of the summer; I seem to keep missing them!
I did, however, find this: for my friends, the turn buoy to mark the ironman swim course during the non-ironman time of year. It seems that I’ve had a few friends out here for training trips over the past year, and they always want to know how to find the ironman swim course. Well, the locals I swam with yesterday tell me that THIS is the turn. They say that it is out directly across from the Kona Tiki Hotel. So now you know what you are looking for!
Thanks TYR for the lovely new training bikinis! Sadly, though, all of my recent treadmill time is not doing much to help the stomach tan situation. Priorities.

Good luck on Sunday. It’s nice that we will have you closer to home for a change. With Louisville and Wisconsin still to go I hope that state side competions will be just what you want going into Kona.
Love you, J.W.
