26 June 2010: Coeur d’Alene

I’m here! But it turns out that when one arrives at 2AM two days before the race, there’s a bit of racing around to be done to get organized. I am very fortunate, though, to have my very own bike shop, Cyclemetrix, at my homestay (see below) here in Coeur d’Alene. When I was here in 2006, Jim, my homestay dad, pretty much entirely rebuilt my bike two days before the race, and this year he has the Wilier ready to rock as well.

Staying with the Kozak family again is one of the highlights of being back in Coeur d’Alene. They are such an awesome family , with two adorable young triathlete daughters (at ages 7 and 11!). Sierra, who you see above in her dad’s shop, will be on the bike course tomorrow in front of our house tomorrow selling Gatorade slushies, so for those of you who are spectating on 4th Street (we pass through here four times), please come visit her little stand! She has been working very diligently on this project since I arrived.

Speaking of kids, Gina Crawford and I had the pleasure of visiting the kids at the local Boys and Girls club yesterday. We answered lots of fun questions. One kid asked how much we get paid. I told him that the person who wins the race earns $10,000. In all seriousness, he replied, “I’m signing up.” Running around all day for ten grand sounds pretty good I guess. If only it were that easy!

I had a tour of the new (to me since I was last here) bit of the bike course by car last night. As you can see, it is beautiful! Half of the bike course seems to be “rolling” hills much like those in Madison. Can’t wait to test them out tomorrow. Time to check in the bike now and go for one last swim.
