8 July 10: Cycling off of the Queen K!

Not a lot of brain cells remaining here today people. But I thought that my first big cycling adventure off of the Queen K was worth recording here . . . Yesterday I had the pleasure of following the boys around on the bike for five hours, and discovered some beautiful new places one can travel by bike that are green and not baking in between lava rocks (not that I mind the alternative–in fact it hadn’t bothered me to ride up and down the Queen K every day). We even had some rain . . . .

We had a GCM for a fearless leader, and he introduced us to what the locals call the “South Loop.” It takes you from town here, climbing up above the Queen K, and then back down and all the way to the water at Kealakekua Bay, near the coastline along there for awhile, and then climbs back up to the highway, where you head north and then climb again above the highway up up up until you are ready to take a quick descent all the way back into town.

I lost count of all of the coffee shops and plantations we passed. We did stop in at one, and this, apparently, is what Ian looks like under the influence of carrot cake. And banana bread.

We topped off our little South Loop adventure with a couple of hours of quality time on the Queen K, after which I found it necessary to grab the nearest cold, wet thing. And the sight of me with a diet soda in hand was worth recording on film, according to the Happy Snapper. I had done everything I could to tire him out in the water before our ride but yet I still had to resort to desperate measures afterwards. FYI I don’t recommend pounding a diet soda before a transition run.

Wow, what a beautiful place to ride. Watch out for the tourists in rental cars on those winding roads though.

I’m glad cycling off the Queen K … didn’t mean cycling OFF the Queen K. I was afraid you were going to tell a tale of unplanned off-road riding. Whew.

Love the ride pics. Yeah, that looks about right for Ian. Take him on a 9 hour ride someday and he’ll look about the same :)
