14 July 10: The Energy Lab

Last night I did my third and final run of the day in a place that is probably quite familiar to a number of my blog-reading friends: the Natural Energy Lab. (For my non-triathlete friends, the Energy Lab is a hot, out-and-back stretch of a couple of miles road that we have the pleasure of running down, and then back up, in the latter stages of the marathon during the Hawaii Ironman. It is infamous for its energy-zapping potential.)

However, I will go ahead and guess that many of you have hardly ever noticed the lovely beach down there . . . I know that my visits to the Lab are generally dominated by hallucinations and fantasies: of icy-cold water, whatever magic fuel might be hiding in my special needs bag down there, and of being done, amongst other things . . .

Well it turns out that there isn’t just a beautiful little beach that makes for a great sunset-watching locale; the Energy Lab also has a rad trail that one can jump on from there.  It hugs the coast and passes some little surf beaches; I can’t get enough of it! So last night I finished my day with a jog there and then some sunset-watching with the big kids and little kids.

The German arrived on his cycling machine, of course . . .

Sidenote: I had actually managed to arrive at the Lab without run shorts, but this oversight enabled me to add another item to my “why I love Kona” list. I threw on my Ultra Natural IIs and ran in this bikini, and no one seemed to have a problem with it! Love this place.

I’m pretty sure there isn’t a man around that would have a problem with you running in that bikini. Also, seems like GCM is also a GSM (swimming) and GRM (running) machine lately?

You are so freaking cute together. Does the GCM have a blog? As side from you, he is one of my heroes now!!!

these pictures are a revelation for/to me. i’ve been there many times, but have never seen the beach—nor anything—since it’s very, very dark by the time i get there. i, too, dream of my special needs goodie bag on the first two miles. i have a can of red bull there, which is as close to illegal pep-up stuff as i go.
