19 July 10: One Last Sunset

It’s been a frantic couple of days as the GCM and I prepared to “move” again. Right now we are in the air over the Pacific on our way from Kona to Lake Placid, New York, where the GCM will be hosting a smashfest this Sunday. Since we had been in our little “home” in Kona for over six weeks, though, we had really settled in, and packing felt a bit like it does when one moves from one “real” home to another. Not fun. However the suitcase-living–meaning only 1-3 weeks in each location–that we have planned for the next several weeks will also be a quite chaotic. It is always a challenge to keep training consistently while moving around so much. But this is the reality of two professional triathletes with different race schedules trying to travel together!
Although we love Lake Placid and have many fun adventures coming up, Maiki and I were both very sad to leave Kona. We both felt that we were very productive in our training there, and were able to get every session done the way we wanted (well I haven’t been running as fast as I would like but that wasn’t an issue of the location!), with the bonus effects of heat and course-specific training. The locals were so welcoming and helpful to us in every way and we are very thankful to them for that. In leaving, we took heart in the fact that we have a couple more trips back to the island this year–and I think there will be many more Kona training camps in our future.
These pictures are from Kua Bay, by the way . . . I have been dreaming of this water since my family visited this beach on a boat before there was ever an access road–when I was twelve years old! We had our last sunset celebration here on Friday night.
Now it’s time for Lake Placid, where the GCM will be out to defend his title at Sunday’s ironman. Last year in this race he was 3 miles into his run when the next guy hit the run course! I can tell you that he is fit–possibly more fit than ever–so this Sunday should be awesome. He definitely has some strong competition, so I think it will be an interesting race! He has requested some bikini-clad cheering, if you know what I mean, so I must see if I can persuade BFF Amanda to assist . . .

Kua is so gorgeous…
Oh dude I am totally in , one catch however… I just checked the weather.com and it is looking slightly to very wet up there. Never fear bikinis and wellingtons are a fine cheering outfit. Clearly brazillian bikini’s ONLY. I wonder if Erik can whip up a few stickers for us as I dont think we make gumboots just yet. I can not wait to see you little one. I will arrive in LP @ lunch on friday. Will bring wettie and K-Swiss’s only NO bike sadly but no worries on that. We will run swim and dance in the expo together. 3 MORE SLEEPS. A
Love Kua Bay (even with the new access road)!
When do you get to Lake Placid? I just arrived today and would love some training partners for the next few days! Baldo is right, it is a little bit fresh and rainy!! Definitely compared to Kona anyway! But Bikini’s are good anywhere aren’t they?
if the GCM is not careful, i may kidnap you from placid!
